Official site: edx.org

★★★★ 4.4 / 5 Try edX

Pros

  • MicroMasters carry academic credit at some universities
  • Rigorous university-developed content
  • Free audit track available on most courses

Cons

  • Verified certificates can be expensive
  • Platform UX less polished than Coursera
  • Less Australian university content than comparable platforms

Overview

edX was founded by MIT and Harvard in 2012 and is now part of 2U. It hosts thousands of courses from over 160 universities and institutions worldwide, including ANU. Its MicroMasters and Professional Certificate programs represent some of the most academically rigorous online content available.

Certificate Value

MicroMasters programs from edX are accepted as credit toward master's degrees at participating universities, making them the most academically valuable certificates available on any platform reviewed. Verified certificates for individual courses typically cost AUD 150-350 per course, which is notably higher than Coursera's subscription model for equivalent depth.

Pricing

Audit access is free. Verified certificates require individual purchase (AUD 150-2,500 depending on program scope). There is no all-access subscription equivalent to Coursera Plus, which makes edX less cost-effective for learners completing multiple courses per year.
